Singer, dancer, coach, transformation facilitator, designer of collective intelligence, and teacher of embodiment and somatic intelligence, Pierre Goirand’s professional journey is multidimensional. It reflects his passions and his constant need for exploration and empowerment.
On the spiritual path, he has studied several Buddhist traditions in depth, notably Vipassana, Theravāda, and Zen, to develop a non-religious and non-sectarian approach to spirituality, including what is now called mindfulness.
In terms of voice, Pierre trained at the Roy Hart Theatre from the mid-1990s, mainly with Jonathan Hart, Noah Pikes, Margaret Pikes, Haim Issacs, Rossignol, Paul Silber, Michèle Laforêt, and Linda Wise. He has taken part in several research groups on improvisation, notably in collaboration with the Paris Conservatoire.
At the crossroads of singing and meditation, the practice of mantras was a turning point in his life. His personal research led him to explore, with great curiosity, various mantra traditions and eventually to compose an original repertoire. Under the name Djalan, he leads mantra singing circles wherever he lives and travels.
For Djalan, singing mantras is a way to connect with ourselves, with others, and with something greater than us. Chanting is a way of caring for and supporting human beings and the world. “Sing, for this is a food our starving world needs,” wrote the Sufi poet Hafiz.
