An exploration of the extended, embodied and alchemical voice in the service of improvised singing. This workshop is open to all levels and is organized by Fiona Chaudon for the Artmel’ association.
This workshop draws on nearly a century of research into the human voice, from Alfred Wolfsohn to the Roy Hart Voice Centre. It offers a bridge between the Wolfsohn–Hart approach and contemporary vocal technique, in the service of improvised singing and musicality.
Participants will be introduced to a map of the living voice through nine gateways:
- Embodied Voice – exploring the body–voice connection through movement, from organic slowness to sustained dynamics, cultivating the spontaneity of impulse (and its paradoxes!).
- Extended Voice – exploring the full vocal range, from deep bass to the highest overtones, resonance explorations.
- Plural Voice – bel canto registers (baritone, tenor, alto, soprano) approached not as limiting labels but as a continuum of expressive possibilities.
- Moving Voice – each emotion explored as a state of being, a bodily experience, a vocal colour and a unique texture.
- Alchemical Voice – exploring and reconciling polarities: feminine/masculine, innocence/maturity, animal/civilized, intimacy/extraversion, shadow/light, depth/lightness.
- Connected Voice – cultivating deep listening to oneself, to others and to the surrounding space.
- Woven Voice – building bridges between the Wolfsohn–Hart practice and contemporary vocal technique, with particular attention to the “bridge”.
- Mapped Voice – developing awareness of the different vocal coordinations and resonant spaces (head voice, chest voice, belting, mix, twang) to foster vocal autonomy.
- Singing Voice – improvisation, musicality, instant composition, melody, rhythm, unison, contrast and more.
