Workshop description:

Open to everyone engaged in personal and artistic creative vocal research.
Breath is the basis of human life, and an essential part of the vocal process. In this course, vocal work is fundamentally linked to proper breath management.

Breathing exercises will help students find flexibility and authenticity in all dimensions of vocal expression, from better handling of emotions and inhibitory tensions to improving the expressive quality and power of the voice. Through this and various vocal exercises, students will be able to expand their vocal range and engage in the expression of texts, songs and improvisation with greater freedom and confidence.

Important! Please choose a piece of work that you have memorised, either a text or a song, and bring a printed copy with you.

Since I first met the Roy Hart Theatre in 1978, voice has become my life-companion, the measure of both my personal and artistic work, and my inspiration. Over time and meetings (with dance, movement, traditional singing, clowning, painting, writing, fasciatherapy), I have built my own way of using the voice in work, play and creative production, relying on the invaluable inheritance of the research of Alfred Wolfsohn and Roy Hart and all those who came after them. From the singing voice to the spoken voice, I'm connected with many artistic disciplines and socio-cultural backgrounds. I connect my teaching to the enlightening person-centred listening of Carl Rogers, and the opening of creative spaces of Authentic Movement.

I believe that voice teaching is a way of meeting, of exchanging and of mutual learning. In my view there are no good or bad singers! Vocal virtuosity is not the ultimate aim of the work. It is important not only to develop the voice, but also to develop oneself through the voice. In order to evolve vocally and artistically I believe it is necessary to make friend with one's weaknesses and to integrate the physical and mental disciplines which give freedom to the imagination and to creative expression.
