Workshop description:

Véronique and Maryline invite you to approach vocal improvisation as a path to self-knowledge, leading to a deeper, more authentic relationship with yourself, with others, and with the world. Singers and improvisers both, they will accompany you as you allow your inner music to be expressed through improvised singing. They will provide tools to help with spontaneous composition – be it physical, vocal, or musical – through intuitive listening, use of rhythm, intention, characters, relation to silence, contrasts, etc.

You will be introduced to melody, unison, counterpoint and grammelots. Musical inspiration will reveal itself as you open up to your breathing, to your emotions and sensory perceptions, and to the images and stories of your imagination. We will alternate between-depth research and playful games, leading you to explore the extended registers, resonance-spaces, and various textures of your voice to nurture your imagination. In this space of artistic freedom, as we develop our listening, deepen our presence and savour the pleasure of sounds, mindful in the moment of what wants or needs to be said or sung, we will share our aliveness in the present moment and give expression to our limitless vocal potential.

The workshop will include physical and vocal warm-ups, individual and group lessons, vocal exploration, meditations, and improvisations. Musical instruments are welcome !

I help create the conditions which allow students’ vocal potential to emerge, while starting from who they really are. I rely on those paramount human qualities, which are for me listening, respect, kindness and empathy. I encourage students to go further, to explore releasing their fears and resistance, to venture into unknown territories. I help them to release their voice, so that it resonates throughout their entire body.

I imagine teaching voice as accompanying someone on his or her journey into the self, which in turn opens him or her to the world. I guide individuals and groups on a creative journey to develop intuitive listening by awakening body and sensory awareness, thus opening an inner space for aesthetic, emotional and musical landscapes. It’s magical when a student feels the presence of something greater than himself and exclaims: ‘It feels like it’s not me singing!’
