Workshop description:

Acting is… telling stories and connecting with human emotions and feelings.
Singing is… telling stories and connecting with human emotions and feelings.
All is movement… within the musical phrase, within the spoken text, within the sung text.
How can we bring choral singing to life ?
It’s not just what you sing, it’s more about how you sing it.
It’s not a question of, what are you trying to sing, it’s a question of, what are you trying to say when you sing…

Articulation, breathing, phrasing, intensity, volume…
Find and use your own singing voice, alone and in a choral group.
As working material we shall include a number of simple and varied choral harmonisations of American Spirituals, in English.
We will concentrate on and explore one song per day, with individual work and group work.

I am drawn in particular to vocal expression through melody and harmony, and to instrumental expression where the instrument ‘sings’ its instrumental line. I believe that music can touch the human soul, and that making music can nourish our soul and help us to discover ourselves and who we are.

I believe that everyone can make music: create sounds and structure them into melodies. That is composing in real time (= improvising). I love to guide my pupils in the discovery of that ability within themselves.
