Workshop description:

At this workshop, you are invited to embody a story with your voice, your breath, your emotions, and your imagination. Bring a traditional tale or another story that speaks to you (aprox 5 minutes). Throughout the week, you will vocally explore the story, its atmospheres, its characters, and give space for the story to move through you, shape you, and reveal itself in new ways.

Daily warm-ups will root the voice in physical presence, while improvisation, singing and deep listening will allow us to explore the emotional and symbolic terrain of the text. The work will alternate between individual and collective research.

This workshop is for anyone who is curious about the intelligence of the human voice and the wisdom of traditional stories. It is led by Maryline Guitton and Mariane Siem, both Roy Hart Voice Centre teachers and voice instructors at professional theatre schools. They both have rich experience working with creative processes.

I imagine teaching voice as accompanying someone on his or her journey into the self, which in turn opens him or her to the world. I guide individuals and groups on a creative journey to develop intuitive listening by awakening body and sensory awareness, thus opening an inner space for aesthetic, emotional and musical landscapes. It’s magical when a student feels the presence of something greater than himself and exclaims: ‘It feels like it’s not me singing!’

The voice work offers a possibility to connect and express without the logic of spoken words. It offers a relief from the conventions and conversations of daily life and a space where you can express your self – here and now – from the body and in tune with the emotions. It opens up to musicality and imagination. It invites you to listen to yourself in a new way and creates a bridge between the internal and the external world. The voice work touches what is deeply human.
